About us

Who are Dublin Cycling Campaign?

We are an independent, voluntary group lobbying local and national government to bring about improved conditions for cyclists and greater recognition of the benefits of cycling.  We were instrumental in getting the 30km/h speed limit put in place in Dublin and have been very supportive of the introduction of the Dublin Bikes.  We have been working both behind the scenes and in the media spotlight since 1993.  We are represented on the Transportation "Strategic Policy" (or policy forming) committees in Dublin City and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Councils and were nominated as one of the consultative bodies during the preparation of the government's National Cycle Policy Framework.  We have a strong research focus informing our work and we collaborate closely with our colleagues in other member groups of  Cyclist.ie (see below).

Alongside our (sometimes intense!) lobbying work, we have an active social calendar: for example, we lead the Bicycle Space in the Global Green area of the Electric Picnic, coordinate the cyclists' presence in the St. Patrick's Day Parade and organise the Bicycle Christmas Party.  We also run regular social cycles where the emphasis is on ice cream and chats, rather than on lyrca and long days in the saddle.  We are growing all of the time and are always delighted to welcome new faces and members at our events and through online communications.

What do we want?

We want to make the streets safer for cyclists and to increase public awareness of the benefits of cycling.  We want to see a quantum increase in the use of the bike for commuting to school, college and workplace, recognising that a 'critical mass' of cyclists in traffic leads inevitably to safer streets. Safer streets for cyclists are also safer streets for pedestrians and lead to nicer cities for all.

Who are Cyclist.ie?

Legal Status
Cyclist.ie is a federation of all the affiliated cycling or walking campaigns/groups on the Island. At present these comprise: Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC); Galway Cycling Campaign (GCC); Cork Cycling Campaign (CCC); Limerick Walk/Cycle Campaign; Skerries Cycling Initiative; Maynooth Cycling Campaign; Waterford Walk/Cycle Campaign; SligoCycles; Kerry Bicycle Festival; Mayo (Westport) Cycling; CTC Right to Ride NI network. Each campaign/group nominates two delegates who collectively comprise the governing body of the federation. It is not a membership-based organisation. The individual campaigns collectively have in excess of 700 members. The organisation is not incorporated. The organisation meets formally at least twice per year. Next meeting is in Dublin in Spring 2013. The organisation is the representative for Ireland with The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) - www.ecf.com.

Dr. Mike McKillen (Dublin Cycling Campaign) is current chairman. Dr. Darren McAdam-O'Connell (Cork Cycling Campaign) is Vice-Chairman.  Dr. Mike McKillen and Shane Foran are members of the ECF Bike Helmet sub-committee and contribute to its research, deliberations and policy development. Dr. Mike McKillen and Damien Ó Tuama (Dublin Cycling Campaign) are members of the ECF's Scientists for Cycling sub-committee. Cyclist.ie is a member of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sports National Bike Week committee. Cyclist.ie members sit on Transport Strategic Policy Committees in Dublin City, Dun Laoire Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council and Galway City local authorities. These committees deal with transport and traffic issues. Cyclist.ie has 12 members who are certified 'Bikeability' instructors under the UK Department for Transport's / CTC's 'Bikeability' scheme.

How Many Paid-Up Members?
Being a federation, Cyclist.ie is not a membership-based organisation. The individual campaigns collectively have in excess of 700 members. This membership penetration has to be set in the context of very low numbers nationally of commuters actually using a bicycle to get to work, school or college. Cyclist.ie posts on its Facebook page regularly record 900+ hits. Dublin Cycling Campaign alone has over 2,500 Facebook followers and newsletters are sent out to approximately 2000 recipients.  Although not based on direct membership we are actively looking into a structure that will allow us to formally engage with, and support, individual concerned cyclists in areas that do not have an active campaign group. Please feel free to contact us if this describes your situation.

Elected Officers
Chairman - Dr. Mike McKillen (Dublin Cycling Campaign);  Vice-Chairman - Dr. Darren McAdam-O'Connell (Cork Cycling Campaign); Hon.Treasurer: Paschal Comerford (Dublin Cycling Campaign); Hon. Secretary: Dr. Jonivar Skullerud (Maynooth Cycling Campaign); Western Spokesperson: Shane Foran (Galway Cycling Campaign).

Aims and Objectives
Cyclist.ie seeks a dramatic improvement in road safety and traffic conditions for all cyclists. Cyclist.ie views the realisation of these aims as vital to facilitate a marked increase in the numbers of commuters (including children) choosing the bicycle as a means of daily transport.  Cyclist.ie was formed in 2008 when the then combined Cycling Campaigns around Ireland joined forces to make a combined submission to the Department of Transport when it was formulating its National Cycle Policy Framework.  The submission is viewable here: /sites/dublincycling.ie/files/users/9/ncp-submission-19-10-08.pdf
