Cycling lanes in Palmerstown-Chapelizod

By Paul Corcoran

There are no infrastructure facilities provided for cyclists on the main Palmerstown N4 section heading into town via Chapelizod from the R148 to the R112. There is no cycling lane provided for cyclists. The picture is a perfect illustration of the lack of lanes provided for cyclist’s commuting into town from Dublin West areas such as Lucan and Palmerstown. There are bus lanes along the N4 route in Palmerstown but there is no signage or lanes for cyclists along this route. There is the option of cyclists to use the old N4 route but both the old and new N4 sections meet at this Junction into Chapelizod and cyclists are competing with cars and buses travelling at quite high speeds due to the exit of the N4 which continues downhill into Chapelizod. Cyclists also have to cycle on the footpath back up the hill and compete with pedestrians while watching oncoming traffic as not to come off the path onto the road. The alternative option is to cycle on the main N4 section but there is a lot of blind corners and its heavily used by buses and taxis. It would be recommended that proper lanes be marked out at least to provide acknowledgement of cyclists in Dublin West.
