Membership & Donations

Why should you become a member of Dublin Cycling Campaign?

We are a completely voluntary group advocating and working on behalf of all cyclists in Dublin, to make conditions better and to encourage more people to cycle. Your membership subscription provides much needed funding and, just as importantly, your membership validates us advocating on your behalf. The more members we have the stronger a voice we have. We are now finalising our "rewards scheme" for cyclists so as to offer more direct benefits and services to our members. Please let us know if there is anything you would like to see us provide.

What we do

We are looking out for you and your interests as a cyclist. We are working to encourage cycling and to represent the interests of everyday cyclists. We want to make the streets safer for cyclists and to increase public awareness of the many benefits of cycling. To do this we advocate on behalf of cyclists to local and national government as well as other agencies that can affect positive change for cycling. And we liaise with other organisations with common interests.

Most broadly, over the last 20 years, we have succeeded in moving the bicycle in from the very fringes of transport thinking and transport policy into the centre - where it belongs!  Ireland now has a very progressive National Cycle Policy Framework which was strongly influenced by our intense lobbying work /sites/dublincycling.ie/files/users/9/national_cycle_policy_framework_2009-2020.pdf.  We are now grafting away to make sure it is implemented and not ignored.  At a Local Authority level, we are working to ensure that Development Plans, Local Area Plans and various transportation proposals cater sensibly and sensitively towards catering for people on bicycles. This means meeting and lobbying politicians, examining proposals and plans and making detailed submissions.  It also means cycling routes with engineers and planners and pointing out the various problems we experience when others forget we exist!

Recent Successes and highlights

Below are just some of the recent highlights that may have affected positive change for you.

- Conference 2012
In June last year we held a major conference on “Gender and Cycling” that was opened by Minister Leo Varadker and attended by many policy makers. http://www.dublincycling.ie/conference2012

 - 30Kph City Centre Speed limit
We have long campaigned for an increased number of 30kph zones in Dublin. The city centre area was a good start and we will campaign to see it expanded and enforced.  http://www.dublincycling.ie/30

 - Bikes on trains
After lengthy campaigning to have bikes permitted on all types of trains, we had major breakthough in 2011 with bikes being allowed on off-peak DART trains. We are still fighting for better services on commuter and intercity trains.  This change in regulations followed on from the adoption of the goverment's National Cycle Policy Framework for which we made detailed submissions during its preparation.  /sites/dublincycling.ie/files/users/9/national_cycle_policy_framework_2009-2020.pdf

 - Advice and Information
Our website has lots of advice for cyclists, including the "Avoid the Thief" video:  http://www.dublincycling.com/AvoidTheThief
