A Happy Day in the West

A Happy Day in the West

Heartiest congratulations to Galway’s cyclists on the joyful birth of their Galway Cycling Campaign (GCC) on 4 April 1998. The birth was attended by over fifty concerned cyclists in the Atlanta Hotel and included the Mayor of Galway, several journalists and DCC representatives Rita Dalton, Damien Ó Tuama and Stephen Coyne.

Although not even three months old yet, the GCC has already:

  • made a submission to the Gardaí on ‘Operation Lifesaver’ and cyclists;
  • made a group submission to Galway Corporation on Provisions for Cycling in the Draft Development Plan. Copies were also sent to the NRA, the Driver Testing Service, the Gardaí, Buchanan and Partners, Consultant Engineers. This 35-page document costs £5 and is available at the GCC address below;
  • prepared a draft Book of Cycling in Galway which documents problems, locations and other concerns of Galway’s cyclists;
  • produced a draft informational package on What Every Motorist should know about Cyclists to be circulated to Driving Schools and Taxi firms;
  • set up a Cycling Accident Database - registration forms were distributed to Galway’s cyclists;
  • produced a fine first newsletter and is currently working on getting sponsorship and increasing membership.

We wish the GCC the best of luck in the future. You can contact the GCC at: Galway Cycling Campaign - An Feachtas Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe, c/o 25 Loughnane Tce, Mervue, Galway. Email: shane.foran@ucg.ie. (DOT)
