2009-08-31 Berkely Rd, D7 QBC (Proposed)

This is a proposal for introducing a QBC on Berkeley Rd. D7 near the North Circular Road.

The cycle lane in the existing design is substandard being only 1.2 m wide. A 900 mm buffer has been provided between this and the line of parked cars which keeps cyclists away from opening doors whichis to be commended.

It is proposed to change this to a design with a general vehicle lane in each direction and a buslane northbound. But look at the section of the bus lane. The cyclist in the section is shown being overtaken by a bus in a substandard width bus lane. He is wedged between this bus and a line of parked cars. Of course, there are no mirrors drawn on the bus. What will happen first? Will the cyclist hit an opening car door or will the cyclist get hit by the mirrors of the bus?

Firstly, the layout of the lane widths and parking is substandard and secondly, given this design neither the cyclist of the bus driver should be in the position shown in the section.

Dublin Cycling Campaign is preparing a submission on these plans. If you have any comments please contact us.
