2009-12-09 Portobello-Fairview Cycleroute

Dublin City Council are have just applied for planning permission to build a cycle route from Portobello to Fairview along the Grand and Royal canals. The report claims it will act as a "demonstration project for future schemes within the city to provide a dramatic improvement in cycling infrastructure."

It is a shame nobody checked the drawings before issuing them. On drawing 3805 showing Forbes St. the same errors we've being constructing for two decades are repeated

  • Substandard 1.25 m cycle lanes are to be provided. Cycle lanes should be an absolute minimum of 1.5 m wide.
  • The cycle tracks are directly adjacent to parking bays putting cyclists at risk of hitting opening car doors. The lane is marked in the one place in the street where cyclists should definitely not cycle.

Dublin Cycling Campaign are preparing a submission on this application. Please contact us if you have any comments.
