RTE Seminar

The producer of RTE’s Nationwide programme, Tom Kelly, recently contacted the Campaign seeking its support for a suggestion he wishes to put to his employers. This is that those who cycle to work and use their bikes at work should receive some financial compensation for the amount of money they are saving their employer. Those who drive to work have parking provided - how much is a year’s parking space in Dublin 4 worth? - and if they drive into town for, say, and interview they get their mileage and their parking paid for.

Aims and Objectives

Aims and Objectives

Some time has been spent at meetings recently attempting to revamp the Aims and Objectives of the Campaign to take account of changing circumstances - for example, to enable us to respond to the Luas controversy, to have a position on the Corpo’s giving cycling priority, and to capitalise on the change of attitude towards cycling among politicians - even at ministerial level.

More work needs to be done but what we are pushing for is:

Fund-raising Cycle

Fund-raising Cycle

Those of you receiving this issue in the post will already have noticed the enclosed sponsorship card for the next fund-raising event, our summer sponsored cycle.

First of all the hard sell: The Dublin Cycling Campaign is almost broke! Yes, we have no money. All the subscription fees are used to keep our membership informed about meetings, actions and of course to produce this newsletter - all done at the minimum of cost. This means that everything else the Campaign does depends on fundraising.

Cycling may not be the LUASer

Cycling may not be the LUASer

Overground, underground, Wombling free - even if LUAS never gets built cyclists may still win out as it looks as though some of the European money which had been earmarked for its development may get redirected to provide cycling facilities. It’s an ill wind... (RV)

Bikes, Locks and Docklands

Bikes, Locks and Docklands

Dublin Cycling Campaign with the Irish Ecological Design Association explored spring in Dublin’s Docklands for the monthly Spin the City ride on Thursday 30 April 1998. DCC is campaigning for cycle paths, safety for cyclists and secure parking facilities in the Dublin Docklands Development Area, as indicated on the DDDA Master Plan.

DCC gets to the Point

DCC gets to the Point

Five dedicated members of DCC represented the Campaign in the Point Depot ‘Our House’ Exhibition over the May Bank Holiday weekend, thanks to Sligo environmentalist Wilhelm Bodewig’s offer of the use of part of his stand. It was a very useful weekend’s work with about sixteen people joining the Campaign as new members, and a lot of interest shown in cycling in general and DCC in particular. Many thanks to Wilhelm for his generosity; and a warm welcome to those new members receiving the newsletter for the first time. (RV, DOT)

A Medieval Spin through Dublin

A Medieval Spin through Dublin

Experience has shown that the most successful Spin the City rides were not only those with huge numbers, but also those with particular theme.

With this in mind, June’s spin will incorporate a guided historical tour through some of Viking and Medieval Dublin before, perhaps, going for a quick goblet of mead.

Meet at Central Bank, Dame Street on Thursday 25 June at 5.30 and bring your friends. (DOT)

A Happy Day in the West

A Happy Day in the West

Heartiest congratulations to Galway’s cyclists on the joyful birth of their Galway Cycling Campaign (GCC) on 4 April 1998. The birth was attended by over fifty concerned cyclists in the Atlanta Hotel and included the Mayor of Galway, several journalists and DCC representatives Rita Dalton, Damien Ó Tuama and Stephen Coyne.

Although not even three months old yet, the GCC has already:

Making Allowances

Making Allowances

In March the Guardian reported that a British Labour MP, Anne Campbell, has persuaded the Commons authorities to pay mileage to MPs who cycle. Granted, it’s only 6.25p per mile but up until now it was nothing for cyclists. Every 6.25p adds up. (RV)

Update on Cycle Routes

Update on Cycle Routes

As everyone must know by now, the Dublin Transportation Office (DTO) is responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of the Dublin Transport Initiative. An important part of the DTI is the provision of cycle lanes. These are in the process of being designed and in some cases have got as far as being built.

Le Tour A Summer of Cycling in Dublin

Le Tour A Summer of Cycling in Dublin

Cycling is IN this summer in Ireland. You’d want to be very much out of touch if you didn’t already know that the TOUR is a-commin’.

Yes, it may seem strange but the Tour de France actually goes through Dundrum, Co Dublin, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford and Middleton, Co Cork on its way to France.

Long the poor relation in transport terms the humble bicycle has come of age in ‘98. We expect a big increase in the number of people getting on a bike this summer.
