New Pedestrian and Cycle plaza in Castleknock

Notice of Intention to Extinguish the Public Right of Way at Old Navan Road/Castleknock Tennis Club has just been posted on the Fingal County Council website. A public consultation will be open for submissions until 4.30pm on 22nd March. The Castleknock tennis club are building 2 extra courts but is donating space from its current car park to build a plaza beside the current M50 crossing. The current design quality is poor and public space is not inviting. The new graphic shows a more inviting public plaza with shared pedestrian and cycling access. The shared pedestrian and cycle bridge provides access to the Educate Together, St Brigids National Schools and St Brigids GAA Club. The M50 bridge will remain open during construction. More details are posted on Fingal County Council website. https://consult.fingal.ie/en/consultation/notice-intention-extinguish-pu…

What is not clear from the designs is how cars will access the Tennis club when the extension is finished and potential issues with conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists and tennis players attending the club. Dublin Cycling Campaign welcomes the planned improvements to the public space at this location but more should be done to protect cyclists along the old navan road to Auburn avenue to make connectivity across the M50 more attractive. A video posted on YouTube gives you an idea of the overpass at the moment. https://youtu.be/OCPXuJPr1hk
