Who are Dublin Cycling Campaign?

We are an independent, voluntary group lobbying local and national government to bring about improved conditions for cyclists and greater recognition of the benefits of cycling. We were instrumental in getting the 30km/h speed limit put in place in Dublin and were very supportive of the introduction of the Dublin Bikes. We have been working both behind the scenes and in the media spotlight since 1993. We are represented on the Transportation “Strategic Policy” (or policy forming) committees in Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Councils.

We are members of the Irish Cycling Campaign, the umbrella organisation for cycling advocacy in Ireland. Irish Cycling Campaign CLG is set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee, and is registered with the Charity Regulator (Registered Charity Number is 20102029).

The day-to-day activities of the campaign are managed by our Executive Committee:

  • Chairperson - Úna Morrison
  • Vice-chairperson - Siobhán McNamara
  • Secretary - Ellen Cullen and Karl Stanley
  • Treasurer - Paschal Comerford
  • Comms - Una Morrison
  • National Cycling Coordinator - Damien Ó Tuama
  • Dublin City - Colm Walsh
  • Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown - Emma Cahill
  • Fingal - Joe Gilligan
  • South Dublin - Martin Quinn
  • Rebecca Wogan
  • Will Andrews
  • Hugh Raftery

Together with our colleagues in Cyclist.ie, we lobby on national issues related to cycling, such as legislative changes and enforcement of road safety legislation. Through the Irish Cycling Campaign we are members of the European Cyclists’ Federation, the European body that promotes cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transportation and recreation. We send at least one representative to the annual Velo City conference, the largest international cycling planning event, to disseminate good ideas and to keep up to date on developments in cycling worldwide. Through the Irish Cycling Campaign, and along with six other partner organisations, we are currently participating in a European Commission funded “Erasmus+” project entitled Generations Pedaling for Inclusion and Climate Action - see here.

We have a strong research focus and, together with our colleagues in the Irish Cycling Campaign, we have made submissions on The Rules of the Road, and have published fact sheets on topics such as Speed Limits, Bicycle Helmets and the Benefits of Cycling.

Alongside our (sometimes intense!) lobbying work, we have an active social calendar: for example, we lead the Bicycle Space in the Global Green area of the Electric Picnic, coordinate the cyclists’ presence in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and organise the Bicycle Christmas Party and Bike Week events. We also run regular social cycles where the emphasis is on ice cream and chats, rather than on lycra and long days in the saddle. We are growing all of the time and are always delighted to welcome new faces and members at our events and through online communications.

At our monthly public meetings we have guest speakers who are experts on transport planning, urban design, public health and cycling. These meetings are a good opportunity to find out what is happening within the campaign and with cycling in Dublin and to socialise with other cyclists.
