PARK(ing) Day 2014: Put Your Thinking Caps on!

PARK(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign has been an active supporter of this city’s PARK(ing) Day for three years now. We transform two parking spaces on Molesworth Street into a space where we can tell the passing public who we are and what we campaign for. The spot could not be better – just in front of the Dáil & Seanad (and we get interest from both!) and just around the corner from the Mansion House, so we get the Lord Mayor visiting as well.

Each year we try to come up with an exciting and catchy theme for our “park” – we’ve had bicycle-powered record players, a notice board where passers-by told us what they loved about cycling and displays of specialist bikes.

This year the event is on Friday September 19th. Each year it’s a rush to come up with an idea, So this year we’re starting early, and we need your help!

There are many ways you can be part of the day. If you have a brilliant idea to create a park in the middle of the city, let us know and and we can team up to see it come to life.

Sometime around mid-July we’ll start looking for volunteers to spend an hour or two in the “park”, so even if you haven’t come up with the idea, please consider helping out, it’s great fun and it helps create awareness in how public spaces could be used in creative ways. And we’ll almost certainly need the loan of a van that morning about 8ish and that afternoon about 6ish to get stuff to & from Molesworth Street.

Check this space for future updates!
