Royal Canal Greenway Needs Your Support

Dublin Cycling Campaign is encouraging the public to make submissions on the proposed new section of the Royal Canal Greenway in Fingal.

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 7th July 2021.

One of the significant issues with this consultation concerns a section of the Royal Canal known as the Deep Sinking. Dublin Cycling Campaign is supporting the North Bank route option at the Deep Sinking, due to the significant engineering and safety challenges facing the South Bank route option. We believe the only viable option for progressing the Royal Canal Greenway in a reasonable timeframe is to pursue the North Bank option at the Deep Sinking.

You find the online consultation about the Royal Canal Greenway here.

About The Royal Canal Greenway

Fingal County Council, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority and Waterways Ireland, is preparing a pedestrian and cycle route (Greenway) along the Royal Canal.

The Fingal section of the Royal Canal Urban Greenway will extend from the Kildare County Council border to the 12th Lock (Old Navan Road), where it will connect with the existing Greenway which continues on towards Ashtown and Dublin city centre.

By completing this missing link in Fingal, and the remaining sections between North Strand and Ashtown in Dublin City, the Royal Canal Greenway will be complete all the way from Dublin to Longford. There is also a spur of the Greenway from Mullingar to Athlone, which will eventually extend to Galway, creating a complete off-road walking and cycling route between Dublin and Galway.

What You Can Do To Help

If you would like to support the completion of the Royal Canal Greenway, we are asking you to make a submission to the online consultation before the deadline of Wednesday 7th July 2021.

Please note that Dublin Cycling Campaign is supporting the North Bank route option at the Deep Sinking section of the Royal Canal Greenway.

To complete the online consultation, you must register an account with Fingal County Council’s website. This process can be a little painstaking but it is necessary to make a submission - and making a submission is important.

Contact Your Local Representatives

We would also encourage people - especially Fingal residents - to contact their local representatives (Councillors and TDs) and ask them to support the North Bank route option.

Contact information for your local representatives can be found here.
