Another Piece of the Dodder Jigsaw in Place!

Dublin Cycling Campaign was delighted to be invited to the launch of the latest section of the Dodder River Greenway to be completed, a short segregated 500 metre section of the overall proposed 17 km route, which took place along Anglesea Road in Ballsbridge today 12th September 2025. The scheme was launched by Dublin City Mayor Cllr Ray McAdam, who himself is an avid cyclist, and is looking forward to formally receiving the handover of the Lord Mayor’s bike by the members of Dublin Cycling Campaign.

As you will see from the images above, and Dublin City Council’s Facebook page, Dublin Cycling Campaign was well represented at the official launch. A number of our members live close to the Dodder river, and are enthused by the development of the route. The overall Dodder Greenway route runs from the mouth of the Liffey all the way to Bohernabreena, at the foot of the Dublin mountains. South Dublin County Council has made considerable progress in completing the longest section of this iconic greenway route from Tallaght/Old Bawn right through to Orwell Road, connecting with the section being developed by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCC). The difficult and critical on road section linking the Firhouse Road across the big and busy Blue Haven junction to Butterfield Avenue and on to the Kilvere estate will soon be completed, allowing off road and segregated cycling from Old Bawn all the way to the Lower Dodder Road before year end.

Overall the project is a good example of cross cooperation between the 3 different Local Authorities involved, but also an exemplar for community liaison along the path of the development for the greenway, much of which has been completed in small sections along an important environmental lung in the south city. Dublin Cycling Campaign lauds the development of this critical green lung, but is anxious that development continues at a faster pace overall. But, in essence this has been designed as an ‘interim scheme’ and there are a number of minor faults/issues with it, which we highlighted in our submission to the original consultation in 2023

We look forward to the linking up of all of the different sections of the overall Dodder Greenway route, and the necessary improvement in this particular section, which should come with the construction of the Bus Connects project across ballsbridge.
