Cycling Infrastructure
The Dublin Cycling Campaign promotes a hierarchy of measures encouraging cycling. In order of priority, these are:
- Traffic speed reduction and enforcement.
- Traffic reduction particularly of HGVs.
- Junction treatment and traffic management
- Cycle lanes and cycle paths.
This is in line with the National Cycle Policy Framework published by the Department of Transport in 2009. We are monitoring progress on the NCPF to make sure these policies become reality.
Since the publication of the Draft Cycle Network Plan for the Greater Dublin Area there has been a significant increase in proposals for cycle routes. We review these and any proposals for bus lanes and road developments that affect cyclists, and make detailed submissions on behalf of the cycling community. Background BusConnects is the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) masterplan for bus travel in Dublin.
The DLR Connector Route is planned to be a safer route from Nutgrove Shopping Centre to Monkstown. The plan is to create more segregated cycle paths along the route.
The Campaign made a submission to Dublin City Council about their plans for interim cycle facilities on East Wall and Alfie Byrne Roads.
DLR County Council has published details on proposed work to improve cycling provision on Churchtown Road Upper. A public consultation is open until March 11th.
South Dublin County Council have published plans for Section 6 of the Dodder Greenway which will link Dodder Valley Park to Kilvere, along Firhouse Road and Butterfield Avenue.
At a recent Fingal County Council meeting Cllr Daniel Whooley proposed a motion for improved cycling facilities at the Coolmine recycling center in Dublin 15.
