Velo-city Cycling Conference 2018, Rio

Velo-city is the largest cycling advocacy and planning conference in the world and in 2019 it will happen in Dublin - as we announced over a year ago. The event has attracted 1500-2000 delegates in its most recent editions, bringing together (amongst others!) cycling campaigners, politicians and policy-makers, transport and planning consultants, the bicycle industry and leading academics from around the world.

This year’s Velo-city will be held in Rio de Janeiro and will focus on the main theme of Access to Life, with a specific focus on cycling inclusion. Topics covered during conference seminars and workshops will include Health, Infrastructure, Technology, Governance and Data.

Following receipt of a grant to help with the promotion of Velo-city Dublin 2019, Dublin Cycling Campaign / Cyclist.ie are sending five delegates to Rio to encourage attendees at Velo-city Rio to join us here in Dublin next year. Our delegates heading to Rio are: Dr. Paul Corcoran (Chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign), Conor Cahill, Mairead Forsythe, Ally Menary and Dr. Elaine Mullan (Waterford Cycling Campaign). National Cycling Coordinator with Cyclist.ie, Dr. Damien Ó Tuama, will also be attending wearing his European Cyclists’ Federation hat. Additionally we are hopeful that at least half a dozen people will be going from Irish public bodies, both to promote Dublin 2019 (with the resultant estimated €3M local spend) and to learn best practice in providing for people of all ages who want to cycle.

As we always do after attending the Velo-city conferences, Dublin Cycling Campaign will disseminate the most inspiring and interesting ideas we encounter at Velo at a special Campaign meeting very soon. This is most likely to take place on Monday evening 9th July 2018 in the Central Hotel, Dublin - details to be confirmed very soon. Watch this space!
