Cycling Infrastructure
The Dublin Cycling Campaign promotes a hierarchy of measures encouraging cycling. In order of priority, these are:
- Traffic speed reduction and enforcement.
- Traffic reduction particularly of HGVs.
- Junction treatment and traffic management
- Cycle lanes and cycle paths.
This is in line with the National Cycle Policy Framework published by the Department of Transport in 2009. We are monitoring progress on the NCPF to make sure these policies become reality.
Since the publication of the Draft Cycle Network Plan for the Greater Dublin Area there has been a significant increase in proposals for cycle routes. We review these and any proposals for bus lanes and road developments that affect cyclists, and make detailed submissions on behalf of the cycling community. On 28th March a cross-party Oireachtas Committee, published its final report Climate Change: A Cross-Party Consensus for Action.
A recent report ( attached below) has been published by the NTA highlighting increased cycling and walking at the recently upgraded roundabout in Scholarstown road.

Overall the Liffey Valley Core Bus Corridor (CBC) is good-quality in places but there are issues.

The FitzWilliam Cycle Route is a proposed cycle route along FitzWilliam Street. It will provide a safe cycle route with a line of parked cars between the cycle lane and the traffic lanes. This will enable people of all ages and abilities to safely cycle in this part of the city. Organisations need to come out in support of the project or it may not be built.
